What are the consequences of the emergence of China and India as economic powerhouses? What effect will the soaring oil prices have? Can a global effort to end poverty succeed, and how? These and other burning issues, will dominate the fifth Economics Summit at the University of Warwick.
The Economics Summit 2006 will take place on the weekend of 17th to 19th of February. Tickets are now available and very limited. Only a bit more than 500 tickets are available. Last year, the Summit attracted approximately 500 students from around Europe onto Warwick University's campus, with a waiting list of over 1000 students. Registration is now available at http://www.economicssummit.com. In 2005, Economics Nobel prizewinner John F. Nash jr. addressed the Summit. This year, the organising team, invited the following speakers:
- Christopher C. Edordu, President of the African Export and Import Bank
- David Willetts MP, Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary of the Conservative Party
- Joaquin Almunia, EU Commissioner for Monetary and Economic Affairs
- Prof Charles Bean, Executive Director and Chief Economist of the Bank of England
- Prof. Charles Bean, Executive Director and Chief Economist of the Bank of England
- Prof. Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
- Prof. Paul De Grauwe, renowned global economist, FT columnist and Economic Policy Adviser to the EU Commission President
- Prof. Sir Alan Peacock, an expert in Public Finance and Economics advisor to the UK government, the OECD and the IMF
- Professor Norbert Walter, Managing Director and Chief Economist of the Deutsche Bank group
- Vincent Cable MP, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer of the Liberal Democrats
In thought-provoking lectures, the speakers will examine future economic development policies, problems and prospects of the Euro, monetary and financial topics or the role of economics in our society. Subsequently, the participants will engage in small group seminars. This should ensure, as Leonie Schell, 3rd year Economics student and this year's coordinator has proclaimed that "the summit will offer a fantastic occasio
n for students that are interested in current and controversial issues to learn from leading experts, to challenge accepted wisdom and to exchange their opinions and thoughts with their peers on an international platform."
The Warwick Economics Summit is a summit of students, by students and for students from all degrees.
